Milestones

  • MS1: Consortium Agreement signed (M2)
  • MS2: All ethics requirements fulfilled (M6)
WP2

Biorefinery Process Development

M1–M36

WP Lead: Centre de Recerca en Bioeconomia Circular (CRBC), Spain

WP2 develops and optimises aqueous enzymatic fractionation protocols for four target agri-food side streams: olive pomace, tomato pomace, citrus peel and cereal bran. Work progresses from lab-scale screening (Task 2.1) through 50-litre pilot validation (Task 2.2) to 500-litre pre-industrial scale-up (Task 2.3). Process integration and water recycling loops are addressed in Task 2.4.

Key Deliverables

  • D2.1 Substrate characterisation report (M6)
  • D2.2 Lab-scale process protocols (M18)
  • D2.3 Pilot-scale validation report (M30)
  • D2.4 Pre-industrial scale-up report (M36)

Milestones

  • MS3: Pilot protocol for olive pomace validated (M18)
  • MS4: All four substrates validated at pilot scale (M30)
WP3

Ingredient Characterisation & Safety

M12–M42

WP Lead: Institut für Lebensmittelwissenschaft Dresden (ILD), Germany

WP3 characterises the nutritional composition, functional properties and safety profile of all recovered ingredient fractions. Tasks cover in vitro digestibility and bioavailability (Task 3.1), functional benchmarking against commercial reference ingredients (Task 3.2), allergenicity and contaminant screening (Task 3.3), and formulation trials in model food matrices (Task 3.4). All work is performed in compliance with EFSA guidance on novel food safety assessment.

Key Deliverables

  • D3.1 Nutritional and functional profile compendium (M24)
  • D3.2 Safety assessment dossier — olive pomace protein (M36)
  • D3.3 Safety assessment dossier — citrus polyphenols (M42)
  • D3.4 Application demonstration reports (M42)

Milestones

  • MS5: Full characterisation of first ingredient class (M24)
WP4

Sustainability Assessment

M6–M45

WP Lead: Universiteit van Groningen (UvG), Netherlands

WP4 quantifies the environmental, economic and social performance of REVALOR biorefinery routes using ISO 14040/14044 life cycle assessment (Task 4.1), techno-economic analysis (Task 4.2) and social life cycle assessment (Task 4.3). LCA studies are conducted at each scale-up step and benchmarked against conventional disposal scenarios. Results directly inform process optimisation in WP2 and regulatory strategy in WP5.

Key Deliverables

  • D4.1 LCA methodology and system boundary report (M12)
  • D4.2 Comparative LCA — pilot scale (M30)
  • D4.3 Full sustainability assessment — pre-industrial scale (M45)
  • D4.4 Techno-economic analysis report (M42)

Milestones

  • MS6: All LCA data for pilot scale collected (M28)
WP5

Market Validation & Regulatory Pathways

M6–M48

WP Lead: BioNovation Partners SL (BNP), Spain

WP5 develops the regulatory strategy and market readiness framework for REVALOR ingredients. Task 5.1 analyses applicable regulatory frameworks (EU 2015/2283, Cosmetics Regulation EC 1223/2009, EFSA guidelines). Task 5.2 prepares two complete ingredient dossiers for regulatory submission. Task 5.3 validates market readiness through industry partner formulation trials and customer acceptance studies. Task 5.4 publishes an open regulatory decision-tree tool for SMEs.

Key Deliverables

  • D5.1 Regulatory landscape analysis (M12)
  • D5.2 Novel food pre-submission consultation report (M24)
  • D5.3 Ingredient dossier 1 (M42)
  • D5.4 Ingredient dossier 2 (M48)
  • D5.5 Open regulatory decision-tree tool (M48)

Milestones
